Audience has mixed reactions

The viral dance video has received quite a lot of criticism whether such performances align with the image and values associated with one of India’s top engineering institutions. Some social media users have expressed strong disapproval, questioning the appropriateness of the song choice as well as the nature of the performance. Several users were saying, “People go to IIT to study, but what is actually happening?” Others tagged the performance as “inappropriate“, “vulgar” and more. However, some were very positive and argued that dancing at a college event should not be subject to harsh judgment. Several said that it was a part of co-curricular activities which in fact promotes a well-rounded student experience. One user stated, “What is the issue, actually?” while another commented, “Nothing vulgar about this,” highlighting that Bollywood songs like Munni Badnaam are part of popular culture.

IIT Bombay not in position to support

Let us tell you that this incident might not be good for the institute, as right now IIT Bombay is making headlines due to its poor placement report for 2023-24. It has been reported that around 25% of its students were not able to secure jobs through campus placements. What is more shocking is that some students reportedly received job offers with starting salaries as low as INR 4 lakh per annum.

Hence, it is now IIT Bombay who will decide whether or not the controversy is addressed officially. This IIT viral video has definitely sparked debate between personal freedom and societal expectations in academic spaces.
